VA Survivor Benefits (DIC)
If a veteran died of a service-connected condition, including a cancer linked to toxic exposure, surviving family may qualify for tax-free monthly Dependency and Indemnity Compensation. Estimate it below.

Who is the survivor?
Who qualifies
DIC is generally payable to eligible survivors when a veteran died from a service-connected condition, or when the veteran had a totally disabling service-connected condition for a required period before death (even if death had another cause). For families on this site, the most common path is a death from a cancer or illness the VA recognizes as service-connected, including conditions made presumptive by the PACT Act, Agent Orange rules, or Camp Lejeune water contamination.
- Surviving spouse: generally married to the veteran at death, with marriage timing rules that can be met several ways.
- Surviving children: unmarried and under 18, under 23 if in school, or permanently incapable of self-support before 18.
- Dependent parents: may qualify for a separate, income-based DIC.
Estimates use the VA DIC survivor rate tables. Eligibility and exact amounts are determined by the VA. Survivors can also ask about survivors pension, CHAMPVA health coverage, and education benefits. The resources page lists official starting points.
