How the VA Rates Each Cancer
Look up how a specific cancer is rated for VA disability compensation, by 38 CFR diagnostic code. Search or filter below.
Bladder cancer
Genitourinary · DC 7528While active: 100 percent during active malignancy and for 6 months after surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or other treatment ends, then a mandatory re-examination.
After remission (residuals): If no recurrence or metastasis, rated on the residual voiding dysfunction or renal (kidney) dysfunction, whichever is more disabling. Voiding dysfunction generally does not exceed 60 percent; renal dysfunction can support higher.
38 CFR reference →Kidney cancer
Genitourinary · DC 7528While active: 100 percent during active malignancy and for 6 months after treatment ends, then a mandatory re-examination.
After remission (residuals): If in remission, rated on residual renal dysfunction or voiding dysfunction, whichever is more disabling. Loss of a kidney is rated separately.
38 CFR reference →Prostate cancer
Genitourinary · DC 7528While active: 100 percent during active malignancy and for 6 months after treatment ends, then a mandatory re-examination.
After remission (residuals): If no recurrence or metastasis, rated on the predominant residual, usually voiding dysfunction (such as urine leakage or frequency) or renal dysfunction.
38 CFR reference →Lung cancer and other respiratory cancers
Respiratory · DC 6819While active: 100 percent while active and for an interval after treatment, then a mandatory re-examination.
After remission (residuals): If no recurrence or metastasis, rated on residual respiratory impairment, such as reduced breathing capacity measured by pulmonary function testing.
38 CFR reference →Digestive and gastrointestinal cancers
Digestive · DC 7343While active: 100 percent during active disease and for 6 months after treatment ends, then a mandatory re-examination.
After remission (residuals): If in remission, rated on the residual digestive impairment under the appropriate digestive diagnostic code for the affected organ.
38 CFR reference →Melanoma (malignant)
Skin · DC 7833While active: Rated 100 percent if it requires systemic therapy such as chemotherapy, during treatment and for a period after; otherwise rated on its effects.
After remission (residuals): After treatment, rated on residual scars or disfigurement, or on impairment of the affected body system if it spread, whichever yields the higher evaluation.
38 CFR reference →Other malignant skin cancers
Skin · DC 7818While active: Rated 100 percent when systemic therapy is required during treatment and for a period after; otherwise rated on disfigurement, scars, or functional impairment.
After remission (residuals): After treatment, rated on residual scars or disfigurement under the skin schedule, or on impairment of a more disabling affected system.
38 CFR reference →Breast cancer (malignant)
Gynecologic/Breast · DC 7630While active: 100 percent while active and following surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or other therapy, then a mandatory re-examination 6 months after treatment ends.
After remission (residuals): If no recurrence or metastasis, rated on residuals such as the effects of mastectomy or other treatment under the relevant codes.
38 CFR reference →Leukemia
Hemic/Lymphatic · DC 7703While active: 100 percent when there is active disease or during a treatment phase. A mandatory re-examination follows 6 months after therapy ends.
After remission (residuals): If no recurrence, rated on residual impairment (for example anemia or other effects) under the appropriate codes.
38 CFR reference →Hodgkin's lymphoma
Hemic/Lymphatic · DC 7709While active: 100 percent with active disease or during a treatment phase, continuing beyond the end of therapy until a mandatory re-examination 6 months after treatment ends.
After remission (residuals): If no local recurrence or metastasis, rated on residual effects under the applicable diagnostic codes.
38 CFR reference →Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
Hemic/Lymphatic · DC 7715While active: 100 percent with active disease or during treatment, continuing beyond therapy until a mandatory re-examination 2 years after treatment ends.
After remission (residuals): If no recurrence, rated on residual effects under the appropriate codes.
38 CFR reference →Multiple myeloma
Hemic/Lymphatic · DC 7712While active: Symptomatic multiple myeloma is rated 100 percent, continuing for 5 years from the date of diagnosis, then a mandatory re-examination.
After remission (residuals): After the period, rated on residual effects under the applicable codes if the disease is not active.
38 CFR reference →Brain and nervous system cancers
Brain/Nervous System · DC 8002While active: A malignant brain tumor is rated 100 percent, with a mandatory re-examination after the prescribed period following treatment.
After remission (residuals): After treatment, rated on residual neurological effects (such as impairment of cognition, motor function, or seizures) under the neurological codes.
