PFOS (Perfluorooctane sulfonate) is a type of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) that was used in a variety of industrial and consumer products, including firefighting foam, stain-resistant coatings, and non-stick cookware. PFOS is a persistent chemical, meaning it does not break down easily and can remain in the environment for a long time. PFOS exposure has been associated with various health effects, including liver damage, developmental problems, and an increased risk of certain cancers.
Military veterans may be at an increased risk of PFOS exposure because of their use of firefighting foam during training and firefighting operations. PFOS was commonly used in firefighting foam until its use was phased out in the 2000s due to concerns about its health effects. PFOS contamination has been found at many military installations, including those where firefighting foam was used extensively, and veterans who were stationed or trained at these installations may have been exposed to PFOS.
In response to concerns about PFOS and other environmental contaminants, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a range of benefits and services for eligible veterans, including health care, disability compensation, and vocational rehabilitation. The VA also has established programs to address environmental hazards at military installations and to monitor the health of veterans who may have been exposed to PFOS and other environmental contaminants. Additionally, the Department of Defense has been working to address PFOS contamination at military installations and reduce the use of PFAS-containing products.
